Lauren Levi, D.M.D., M.S. is an assistant professor and the director of orofacial pain, headache, and sleep at Touro College of Dental Medicine. She is a board-certified orofacial pain specialist who has dedicated her career to treating and managing head, neck, and facial pain and sleep-related breathing disorders. She is uniquely qualified to treat craniofacial pain and maxillofacial pain conditions including temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ/TMD), cranial neuralgias, neuropathic pain, migraine and other headache disorders, and other pain conditions that affect the head and neck as sleep-related breathing disorders including snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. She is also a fellowship-trained dental oncologist who has extensive experience treating the head, neck, and oral sequelae of chemotherapy, head and neck radiation therapy, and stem cell transplants.
Dr. Levi received her bachelor of arts (B.A.) in psychology from Columbia University. She obtained her doctor of dental medicine (D.M.D.) degree from The University of Florida College of Dentistry, where she received an award for excellence in oral medicine. In dental school, Dr. Levi was actively involved in community outreach, delivering dental care to indigent populations in Florida and central Ecuador. After graduating, she completed a general practice residency at New York Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Medical Center. Due to her strong interest in oral medicine and orofacial pain, Dr. Levi then completed a dental oncology fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC). While at MSKCC, she gained substantial training in treating and managing the head and neck side effects of chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and stem cell transplants. She has expertise in assessing and managing the head, neck and oral manifestations of head and/or neck surgery, osteonecrosis, and osteoradionecrosis of the jaw along with managing patients with solid and liquid tumors and treating other non-malignant oral pathological conditions. At MSKCC, she gained additional education in tobacco and alcohol cessation and completed rotations in radiation oncology and head and neck surgery.
Following her fellowship, Dr. Levi completed an advanced and comprehensive mini-residency program on temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) and orofacial pain at the University of Kentucky under the tutelage of world-renowned expert, Dr. Jeffery Okeson. She also completed a year-long course at Rutgers School of Dental Medicine in orofacial and TMJ-related pain. Additionally, Dr. Levi pursued a master's degree in orofacial pain and oral medicine at the University of Southern California. This program equipped Dr. Levi with the unique skill set to treat orofacial pain conditions and dental sleep medicine. She then pursued advanced training in headache medicine at the Jefferson Headache Center.
In addition to serving as the director of orofacial pain, headache, and sleep at Touro College of Dental Medicine, Dr. Levi is an adjunct clinical assistant professor at Jefferson Health where she served as an assistant professor in orofacial pain prior to working at Touro. Before Jefferson, she was an adjunct assistant professor at the New York University (NYU) College of Dentistry and a clinical instructor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Dr. Levi frequently lectures on orofacial pain, headache, oral medicine, and sleep medicine-related topics. She serves on the board of Alpha Omega dental fraternity, the access to care committee of the American Academy of Orofacial Pain, the speaker's bureau of Triage Cancer, and the Oncology Advisory Council of MyLifeLine.org. Additionally, she is an active and contributing member to the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC) and the International Society of Oral Oncology (ISOO) Osteonecrosis and Osteoradionecrosis of the Jaw Systematic Review and Fungal Oral Care Systematic Review Study Groups. She also is a reviewer for the Oral Surgery Oral Medicine Oral Pathology Oral Radiology (OOOO) Journal and an active member of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM).
